Explore how to treat water

We have water testing kits available for schools to hire. This fun and educational activity encourages students to test their science skills by creating a water filter. They can then see how well they transform raw water to a drinking quality standard.

The kits also include a range of other equipment to check chlorine and pH levels in your water.

How it works

The water filter activity replicates the filtration and percolation process. Students choose materials to filter their raw water through and test which options produce the cleanest water.

Before the activity begins the raw water is given a rating in a turbidity metre test. This shows how ‘dirty’ the water is prior to any filtration. It is measured again after it has been through the students filter. The aim is to get a 0.5 rating that matches our water when it leaves the water treatment plant. Remember even if you manage to reach this standard, the water isn’t safe to drink!

The second activity helps inform students how we disinfect our drinking water to make it safe to drink. This kit measures the amount of chlorine in a water sample.
