Be waterwise
Most of the water used across urban areas is used at home. Climate change is making us all think about the way we use water. You may not realise it, but how you shower, clean your dishes and water your garden impacts the environment.
Follow these tips
When brushing your teeth or washing your hands, turn off the tap and save fifteen litres of water per minute.
Always use a full load in the washing machine and dishwasher and select eco mode.
When washing your car, use a bucket and a trigger nozzle on the grass, not the driveway.
Limit shower time to four minutes. Try using a timer or playing a four-minute song.
Think before you pull the plug. Could you rinse recyclables in that water or use it on your garden?
When buying new products, look for the Smart Approved WaterMark or a WELS star rating.
Check that your water meter stops overnight. If the numbers change, contact a registered plumber.
A drip a second wastes 12,000 litres a year. Change the washer or components to stop wasting water.
Before watering your garden, check the weather forecast. You might not need to water if it’s going to rain.
Only water your plants in the morning or evening and use a trigger nozzle.
