Your own supply
We know that water is a limited resource that needs to be carefully managed. That’s why we encourage the use of rainwater tanks and greywater recycling.
Rainwater tanks
Rainwater tanks must be well managed and maintained to keep the water supply safe.
Things such as dust, leaves, pesticides, vermin, birds, and insects can contaminate rainwater. Tanks should keep mosquitoes out so as not to provide breeding sites.

Greywater recycling
Greywater comes from baths, showers, bathroom sinks, laundries and kitchens. It doesn’t include water from toilets. This is blackwater which may contain pathogens that spread disease.
We can save drinking water supplies by using greywater in the garden or for toilet flushing.
Greywater may contain pathogens that spread disease so it needs to be properly recycled. Further information is available from the Environment Protection Authority.
